Washing Synthetic Wigs

Caring for a synthetic wig is essential for maintaining its appearance and sanitary purposes. With daily use and proper maintenance, a synthetic wig typically has a lifespan of 4-6 months. H&H Boutique sells a wide range of synthetic wigs and provides easy-to-follow tips and advice for ensuring they stay in great shape.

How Do You Properly Wash Synthetic Wigs?

To prevent the strands from tangling, gently detangle the hair with a wide-tooth comb. Use synthetic wig shampoo and conditioner, not standard human hair products. Fill your tub or a large container with cool (never warm or hot) water, add the shampoo, and wash according to the specific instructions on the shampoo packaging. You do not want to soak the wig longer than recommended as this can damage the hair fibers. Soaking 3-5 minutes is usually ideal. Rinse the hair with cool water and repeat these steps with conditioner or follow with a spray leave-in conditioner made for synthetic wigs.

How Often Should You Wash and Style Your Synthetic Wig?

For optimal longevity, do not over wash. Synthetic wigs should be washed typically every 8-10 wears for daily use, or every 1-2 months for occasional wear, and always with products specifically designed for synthetic fibers. Over washing can lead to, dryness, tangling, and frizz, while signs like stickiness, dullness, or product buildup indicate it's time for a wash. Since synthetic wigs are generally pre-styled, daily styling is minimal, often requiring just a gentle shake, finger-combing, or a light mist of wig-safe conditioning spray; heat styling should only be attempted on wigs specifically labeled "heat-friendly" and with the lowest possible settings to prevent damage.

How Should You Dry Synthetic Wigs?

After washing your synthetic wig, air drying is the best way to dry it. Gently blot excess water with a soft towel, avoiding any twisting or wringing. Then, place the wig on a wig stand or a similar tall object to allow air to circulate, ensuring it dries completely while maintaining its style and shape. Avoid using blow dryers or other heat tools, as direct heat can easily damage or melt synthetic fibers.

Maintenance and Styling

Several maintenance and styling tips can help keep your synthetic wig looking its best.

  • Only use a wide-tooth comb or a wig brush: Using anything else may damage its strands. Always detangle wigs after each wear before storing.
  • Don't comb it while it's wet: The friction can cause breakage or tangles.
  • Wash and condition it properly: Follow the instructions on the product packaging.
  • Never sleep in your wig: It can easily cause the strands to tangle.
  • Keep it away from kids and pets: They may inadvertently damage it.
  • Don't use hot styling tools: They can burn or melt the strands. *Hot styling tools can be used on heat-friendly synthetic or human hair only.
  • Avoid over-styling it: The less fussing you do with a synthetic wig, the longer it might last.
  • Store it correctly: Keep it on a wig stand away from direct sunlight and direct heat sources, which can damage the strands.
  • Ask questions: Don't hesitate to contact us with questions or concerns. We're always here to help.
