Guide on How to Make Your Wig Not Itchy

Human hair and synthetic wigs have gained popularity recently and are widely used for several reasons. However, they're prone to pesky tangles and may cause itchiness especially after wearing them for an extended period. If your head is more sensitive, you may notice itching more than someone with a less sensitive scalp.

Why Is My Wig Making My Head Itchy?

Real human hair or synthetic wigs are great for altering the wearer's appearance without harming their natural hair, but they can also cause the scalp to itch underneath. Here are some common causes of an itchy scalp when wearing a wig.

Cheap Wigs

Most cheap wigs aren't always comfortable, often resulting in scalp irritation. They're made using cheap materials that can irritate the skin, causing loose hair.

Wig Caps

Wig caps are essential for overall wig comfort. However, the wrong wig cap size or material can cause itchiness and discomfort.

Allergies

Wig manufacturers advise wearers to wash wigs before the first time using them to remove the hair styling products remaining from production residue or dust from storage. These chemicals can cause allergic reactions to the scalp, leading to irritation or hair loss.

Build-Up Oil, Dust and Products

It's essential to wash wigs regularly to remove chemicals, dust and oil that accumulate from continuous wear. Skin irritation can appear from shampoos, moisturizers, conditioners and glue build-up.

How to Prevent Itchiness

One of the most effective methods of preventing scalp itchiness is taking preventive measures against hairpieces.

    • Use the right cleaning products. Synthetic hair washing requires special shampoos designed for synthetic hair fibers. Wearers should only buy and use cleaning products manufactured for use with their wigs.
    • Try natural hair products. Use more natural hair cleaning and styling products whenever possible to prevent developing allergies and irritations. Don't use harsh chemicals or ingredients that may irritate the skin or trigger allergic reactions.
    • Take care of your scalp.  Keeping your scalp clean and healthy is important. Excess oils and sweat on your scalp can clog pores and cause irritation. Washing your scalp with gentle cleansers and massaging the scalp regularly can increase circulation and help keep the skin healthy. Wearing breathable wig caps helps to keep the scalp cooler and provides better ventilation keeping the scalp feeling fresh.
    • Consider using cotton, Bamboo, or silk wig liners. We recommend covering dry or itchy scalp with a silk or cotton wig liner. These breathable materials provide an excellent barrier between your scalp and the wig.
